5 ways to look your best for photos!
So, you have a professional photo session scheduled? Here’s how you can be sure to look awesome…
- Pick out clothing that you look fantastic wearing! Easier said than done. What do you wear that always gets compliments? If you’re not sure, go to a nice clothing store and ask a sharp looking salesperson what they would recommend. Even if you don’t end up buying it, they will give you an honest, objective opinion (and your family and friends might not). I always tell people to wear a color that makes their eyes stand out. Stay away from bland choices that make you look dull, or wild prints that would be distracting! If you’re still not sure, bring a few favorites and let your photographer choose.
- Take good care of your skin. Skin care starts months (or years) before your photo, but get on a good regimen as soon as possible because it truly makes a difference. I have retouched enough scars, dents, wrinkles, blemishes, bumps and sun damage to know! A lot of these things could be avoided with some good daily habits. If nothing else, a good cleanser and moisturizer (morning and night) does wonders for men or women.
- A good makeup application can make or break your photo. I could write a whole book about this one, but basically, hire a makeup artist, or if you do it yourself, do some research on makeup for photos. Even men normally need a little powder. Ask for help if you’re not sure.
- Sleep! Make sure to get some good rest the night before. If your eyes look puffy, put some ice cubes in a baggie and put them on your eyes before your session. Take some deep breaths and let yourself feel calm and relaxed.
- Get your mind right. Think about the intended audience for your photo. If it’s a business headshot, imagine your favorite client standing in front of you. Practice your confident, relaxed smile in front of a mirror. Play some music to get you in the right frame of mind while you are driving to your session! Sometimes I recommend to engaged couples to drink a glass of wine in their car when they park in my driveway and kiss a while before they come in. For families, stop at a playground or stop for milkshakes on your way so you feel relaxed and happy. Avoid showing up a frazzled mess because it will show in the pictures. A genuine, happy expression is what we’re looking for, so do what you can to help make it happen!
